Library Director, Berkeley Heights (NJ)

The Berkeley Heights Public Library is an inviting and friendly space. Our Board of Trustees is seeking an enthusiastic, motivated leader with strong interpersonal and fiscal management skills. Our new Director will work collaboratively to increase community engagement with our library through communication and marketing; new and existing partnerships; and programming that reflects the needs of our community.

About Our Library

The Berkeley Heights Public Library enjoys a newly-created space within the municipal complex, and is centrally located within walking distance of our downtown area. Welcoming and inclusive, we serve over 13,000 residents, and enjoy strong support from the community. We have an annual budget of 1.2 million; and a staff that includes 5 full-time and 11 part-time employees.

Our library provides information and resources for personal growth, as well as shared experiences that connect and enrich our community. Residents enjoy our wide range of offerings, including print and digital materials, museum passes, and variety of programming for all ages. The Berkeley Heights Public Library also offers meeting and study spaces that are available for community use. Our newly completed strategic plan will help us work collaboratively over the next few years to meet the evolving needs of our community.

Conveniently located on the western edge of Union County, just 28 miles from New York City, Berkeley Heights is a desirable place to live and work. About This Opportunity

The Berkeley Heights Public Library Board of Trustees is seeking a Director to serve as an organizational and community leader for our municipal library. Our ideal candidate is energetic and engaging, with strong interpersonal, financial, and facility management skills. Our new Director will prioritize growing the community’s engagement with the library, and will be comfortable with marketing, outreach, and public relations.

Related Experience

  • An ALA accredited MLS/MLIS or equivalent degree.
  • A New Jersey Professional Librarian certificate, or eligibility to acquire.
  • At least 5 years of progressive professional public library experience. Director’s experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrated experience building community relationships and partnerships.
  • Experience managing a budget.
  • Experience collaborating and communicating with a library board of trustees.
  • Experience managing staff.
  • Ability to think critically and creatively to solve problems and implement ideas.
  • Grant experience is a plus, but not required.
  • Current knowledge of library technology, trends, innovations, and New Jersey library law.

Compensation and Benefits

This is a full-time position with a minimum salary of $100,000 (salary negotiable based upon experience).

Benefits include: health benefits, paid holidays, paid vacation, paid sick leave, and enrollment in the PERS pension system.
